The competition to win a drive in the Rockingham round of the AirAsia Clio Cup has reached it’s conclusion and the winner has been chosen. The lucky winner is Mark Gibbons of Northwood, Middlesex who beat off competition from nine other drivers to win the seat in the once in a lifetime competition.
The shortlist of ten was chosen at random from everyone who had bought an advance ticket. They then underwent a day of intensive assessment at The Racing School, which included taking on one of their V8 Touring Cars.
The ten were then whittled down to three, whom all got their first chance to take the Clio Cup race car out for a spin around the famous Northamptonshire circuit while being scrutinized at every turn to judge their abilities in the car.
Chief Instructor Chris Hodgetts told them; “If you make one mistake, you’re out. You can’t afford to make any mistakes on the day as you will be competing against professional drivers who have been racing for years.”
Understandably, Mark was ecstatic at hearing the news that he had won the opportunity to race in one of the most high profile race series in the UK.
“This is absolutely brilliant,” he said. “Thank you so much to Rockingham and The Racing School for this opportunity. I have been trying for years to get into motor sport – it’s been a dream since I was six years old.”
He added: “I’ve been karting since I was 17, and I raced in the MG Trophy in 2005. However, due to money restraints, I’ve never been able to fully pursue my dream of being a professional racing car driver. These days I’ve just been making-do with practicing on the PlayStation!”
Mark will now be spending much of the next week out on track, preparing himself for the big event which begins with Free Practice 1 on Friday morning.
All the staff at BTCC Crazy would like to congratulate Mark on winning the chance to fulfill his dream.
