Despite a mixed weekend at Brands Hatch, Whyteleafe teenager Charlie Robertson left us in no doubt of his claim to the 2012 title. Robertson nearly walked away with a double victory on the opening weekend of the season, but a puncture in race one spoiled the promising start to the weekend which saw Robertson consistently at the top of the field in free practice sessions. A determined performance in race two provided the win he was after – with a clear three second margin and an improvement on his own lap record.
This weekend the racer is heading to Donington Park for rounds three and four of the 2012 Ginetta Junior Championship aiming to secure a double victory for the Investigo and Ria Capital Markets-backed HHC Motorsports. Donington holds good memories for the 15-year old who achieved his first podium position in his third ever car race in his maiden season.
“I’m really looking forward to being back at Donington”, said the MSA Academy youngster, “I know we should be going there leading the championship, without the puncture in race one at Brands we would have had two wins already. We’re still third in the points though and only a couple behind George [Gamble] in second place, so it’s still been a good start to the year.”
Robertson heads to Donington at a disadvantage despite his promising performance so far as he was unable to attend an official test session at Thruxton on Thursday 5th April, unlike some of his series rivals. However Robertson is undeterred: “It’s always close racing at Donington and there are a lot of quick drivers at the front in Ginetta Junior but we know we should be capable of fighting for wins again”, added Charlie, “The main thing we need to do is close the gap to Niall [Murray] at the top of the championship and I’m confident we can do that.”
The Ginetta Junior Championship will continue on 14th-15th April at Donington Park circuit.
