Speedworks Motorsport’s Tom Ingram was left happy to emerge as the fastest front-wheel-drive car in qualifying at Knockhill, but admitted battling against the rear-wheel-drive cars could be a challenge.
Topping a damp opening practice, the two-time 2017 race-winner set the fifth fastest time during a dramatic qualifying session later in the day.
With conditions improving as the session progressed, the Toyota Avensis driver timed it perfectly to firstly make the switch to slick tyres and then deliver a lap good enough for the third row of the grid.
“I’m very happy to have come away with fifth,” he told BTCC Crazy. “Given the sort of circumstances we all faced with the track constantly getting quicker it is all about being lucky and making sure you’re on the track at the right time.
“The team did a great job on making the call when they did and it has put us in a position to have a good day today.”
Looking to take the fight to the quartet of rear-wheel-drive cars in front of him, Ingram added: “There is a chance of winning and being on the podium today but we may have to play the long game.
“I don’t think it will happen in race one though. I can see those in front of me battling it out on the opening lap and then it will stay like that for the rest of the race. My aim is to be the first of the front-wheel-drive cars as we’ve got the pace over the likes of Senna Proctor, Dave Newsham and James Cole.”
