Power Maxed Racing’s Tom Chilton believes qualifying will be even more important for everyone this weekend as the BTCC heads to Oulton Park.
Traditionally a circuit that has made overtaking difficult, primarily due to the narrow confines, the Cheshire venue is a popular stop on the calendar for drivers and fans alike.
Like many circuits this year, Chilton heads into rounds 10, 11 and 12 getting his eye back in and has sighted qualifying being pivotal if he is to score well on Sunday, more so than any other track.
“I was struggling with food poisoning but we had good pace at Thruxton and things could have been better had we not been caught out by red flags in qualifying,” Chilton told BTCC Crazy.
“Heading to Oulton Park; I really can’t wait! It is a great circuit and one that I have always enjoyed competing at down the years. It is all about qualifying there too as overtaking isn’t too easy.
“I’d like to think that we can be inside the top ten and then work from there. I want another podium and I think it is definitely on the cards.”
With a mixture of flowing and slow corners, the former Independents’ champion believes that Oulton Park will likely show the strengths and weaknesses of the Vauxhall Astra, admitting that the summer break will be the perfect time to get on top of their flaws.
He said: “The car isn’t quite right but we aren’t far off now. As I’ve said before I think the second half of the season will be where we are able to show what we can do following some proper testing.
“We’ve been really good through the quick corners at the circuits we’ve been to so far, its just the slower corners where we need to improve.
“I’ve found myself watching other cars and how they are reacting on circuit when racing, so far it has been quite beneficial and confirmed to us further of what direction we need to go.”
