Mat Jackson signed what has been a difficult 2017 season off for Motorbase Perfomance with a seventh Independent victory at Brands Hatch this past weekend.
Scoring just one overall victory [Croft] this year, the Shredded Wheat backed squad have had to dig deep over the course of the campaign to consistently battle towards the sharp end of the grid.
Qualifying P15, the Ford Focus driver Jackson scythed his way through the field in tricky conditions in race one to take what eventually turned out to be a lonely fourth.
The multiple race winner repeated that in race two to take the win in the Independent category before hanging on to seventh in race three, an encounter which saw him make unfortunate contact with title protagonist Colin Turkington.
“We had a great opening race to come through from 15th to take P4 and it was a great start to the weekend,” Jackson said. “Race two was mega. We were out at the front for most of the race before getting muscled out of it which was frustrating, but the car had great pace.
“The trick conditions I think played into our hands. It helped to even out the playing field and throw the BOP out of the winer. Race three was frustrating again, we had a strong start up to P3 from seventh but then we got dripped from behind.
“Unfortunately it leaves a bad taste in the mouth that contact was made which ultimately cost Colin [Turkington] the championship which isn’t what any of us want to be involved in.”
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Jackson added: “It’s been a difficult season. We certainly haven’t has the best run regulation wise and that has hurt us this year. We’ve carried a handicap which was addressed half way through but it’s been hard to overcome.
“We move on though, and there’s a lot of work to go in during the winter. That’s the plan, to go away, put in the work and come back stronger next year and win the championship.”
