Jack Goff optimistic of BMW pace after salvaging qualifying

Jack Goff heads into the first of today’s three races optimistic that the BMW 1-Series can be a threat despite having to salvage eighth place in qualifying at Brands Hatch.

The IHG Rewards-backed racer had languished in last place for much of the 30-minute session and had looked on to be starting from the back row after failing to set a lap time until the latter stages.

“We hadn’t scrubbed enough tyres in second practice so that left us with our backs against the wall,” admitted Goff to BTCC Crazy. “When I saw the rain starting to fall I did think that we had blown it and we’d be starting towards the back because the track would be too greasy and to begin with that was the case.

“It is all about finding a rhythm around here and despite their being a lot of cars on-track I was able to do that. I had a good run of laps and managed to climb up to eighth in the end which was pretty goo considering how the session had started.

“I’m not too sure if we could have matched Sam’s [Tordoff] time but we may have been very close to it. It is just a shame we weren’t out on-track at the right time.”

Heading into the opening 24-lap encounter around the 1.2 mile layout, the BRDC Superstar is quietly confident that the rear-wheel-drive machine can be a threat towards the sharp end of the grid.

He explained: “It is a little bit of a step into the unknown for me in terms of it being my first race in RWD but I am confident the car will be able to challenge for podiums. It is going to be important to make sure I look after the tyres and don’t kill them too early on.”

Round one of the 2016 season is scheduled to get underway at 11:32.
