Jack Goff was left satisfied with his performance in opening practice at Thruxton as he topped the times in his Honda Civic Type R.
Ending FP1 around the 2.3 Hampshire circuit at the summit, the Eurotech Racing driver set a best time of 1:16.454 – a tenth of a second ahead of Adam Morgan.
Speaking to BTCC Crazy following the opening session, Goff said: “It is nice to end FP1 fastest, it means nothing though. We know what we are doing but not what everybody else is. My best lap wasn’t perfect but we aren’t too far off – there is a little bit left on the table.
“I think we will be dip down into the mid 15’s [which would be a new lap record]. That first session was about putting together a race run, which went well. The tyres seemed to hang on really well and there was still quite a bit left in them. It is a good start and we can only keep pushing forward now.”
Having showed front-running pace at both Brands Hatch and Donington Park, the 25-year-old admits he is yet to string together a strong weekend where he can score a big haul of points.
Tackling a circuit that has been well-suited to Honda in the past, Goff is optimistic that three strong finishes at Thruxton could thrust him back into the early title conversation.
He said: “If I’m honest we may be in sixth in the points but it hasn’t gone to plan so far. We have had really good pace, and that has been evident on Saturday’s but we’ve not always had the luck on our side for race day.
“We have to aim to have a good weekend, better than we have had already this year. If we get our act together then there is no reason why we can’t be right in the mix come the end of this weekend in the championship.”
Free practice two is scheduled to get underway at 12:35.
