Ashley Sutton: “We’ll need to be on the absolute limit in qualifying”

Ashley Sutton has stated he will need to be on the absolute limit in qualifying at Silverstone later this afternoon if he is to bag himself a strong starting spot for race one of the weekend.

Carrying 75kgs on board of his Subaru Levorg virtue of leading the championship standings, the Team BMR finished free practice two in 23rd after showing strong pace in damp conditions earlier in the morning.

Setting his sights on the shootout for pole position later today, the 23-year-old has sighted the top 15 as a credible result.

“If I could be inside the top 15 then I’d be happy with that,” Sutton told BTCC Crazy. “I said at Rockingham that the lap I did in qualifying was one of my best – I think that I will need to surpass that here today to be in the mix.

“We’ve not quite find the sweet spot in the car so I’ll be on the absolute limit of what is possible.

“Ideally we need to be around Colin [Turkington] as he is my main rival in the championship. I’ll be giving it everything so we will see what can be achieved.”

On the subject of working with his team-mates in qualifying, he explained: “A lot of teams are going to do it [gain a slipstream off each other] so I think we will. If I’m honest we haven’t had the conversation on how it will go yet but we are going to do when we debrief.”

Qualifying is scheduled to get underway at 15:45.
