The Dunlop MSA British touring Car Championship’s traditional two-day summer test at Snetterton drew to a close with Ashley Sutton emerging as the man to beat, setting the fastest time of anyone.
Following on from a full day of dry running on Wednesday, a majority of teams and drivers continued working through their programmes during the morning’s session before heavy rain and thunder halted running.
Enjoying a stellar first half to the season with Team BMR in which he has notched two wins, Sutton clocked a best time of 1:57.130 around the 2.99 mile track – eclipsing the fastest time set by Jack Goff yesterday.
His benchmark time was ultimately never beaten however the Eurotech Racing driver got close and underlined his speed by finishing within 0.059 of the Subaru Levorg driver.
Tom Ingram was third with BTC Norlin Racing’s Dave Newsham fourth and double champion Colin Turkington rounding out the top five, a little over half a second off Sutton.
Adam Morgan was sixth whilst Chris Smiley made it two Chevrolet Cruze’s inside the top seven. Closing out the top ten was Mat Jackson, Josh Price and former British GT racer Rory Butcher, who filled in for Martin Depper at Motorbase Performance.
The Team Shredded Wheat Racing squad are set to run just two cars at Snetterton later this month when the series resume with Knockhill being tipped as the venue where they will return to full strength and run all three Ford Focus machines.
Despite the rain in the afternoon, a total of 14 cars made an appearance on circuit with Team HARD’s Jake Hill clocking the fastest time late on as conditions improved.
