End of Season: Adam Morgan is 2011 Ginetta GT Supercup Champion
In a nail biting finish to the Inaugural Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup Season, Adam Morgan was crowned champion of 2011.
Going into the round, three men could have taken the coveted title and on the final lap it still wasn’t clear who could have taken the title. But second place was enough to win the championship for Morgan, five points clear of Total Control Racing’s Carl Breeze.
Tom Sharp began the race on pole position with Adam Morgan in second, Carl Breeze in third, George Murrells in fourth place, Nathan Freke fifth and Colin White sixth. When the lights went out Sharp got a peerless start and shot into an immediate lead ahead of Freke who got an electric start to go into second.
Breeze managed to keep third ahead of Morgan, which did no harm to his championship aspirations, and mounted a to get ahead of Freke but he defended hard in his Century Motorsport car.
The Safety Car was out on lap one due to an incident when the lights went out in which Jody Fannin collected the pitwall while trying to avoid the stalled car of Jamie Orton.
On the restart, Adam Morgan managed to get ahead of Breeze for third position but that was short lived after Breeze managed cut back in front. In the meantime, Sharp continued to lead well from Freke and he started to open a healthy lead and started to control the race.
With it all to do, Breeze pressured Freke for third to try and launch an attack on Morgan but Freke managed to keep him behind. At the chequered flag, Sharp won by 0.9 seconds from new champion Morgan with Freke third just 0.3 seconds ahead of the hugely unfortunate Carl Breeze who had a near-impossible task of winning the title.
“Getting the ninth win is pretty good”, said Sharp, “I’ve learnt a lot this year, I think a year ago I might have lost that race when he (Morgan) started catching. Whatever we do next year, this will stand us in good stead for sure. To win two races this weekend is mega and means we’ve won all the races on one weekend three times this year – I never thought we’d do that.”
Newly crowned champion Adam Morgan was emotional, and rightly so when he got out the car.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, lost for words”, said Morgan, “At the beginning of this year I was hoping to finish top three in the championship, to come out on top is unbelievable. Massive thanks to Ciceley Racing, the team has worked so hard this year – we’re a privateer team and to win a championship like this at this level is a massive result.”
