Double Celebrations: Robertson Wins And Morris Crowned 2011 Champion
Race two of the Ginetta Junior Championship at Brands Hatch GP Circuit saw double celebrations, as Charlie Robertson takes his third victory of the season and Seb Morris is crowned 2011 Champion.
Before the race even got underway, it was bad news for George Gamble and the TJ Motorsport team, as the incident that happened in race one really took its toll on the G40. The team done all they could to get the car ready for the pole sitter, but more problems occurred just before the start of the race, leaving Gamble no choice but to watch from the pits.
Due to the absence of Gamble, it meant his team-mate Sennan Fielding was at the front of the field, and as the lights went out to get race two underway, it was HHC Motorsport’s Myles Collins who got an absolutely flying start off the line from fifth on the grid thanks to a little stumble on the grid from Fielding, which also let through Brad Bailey, William Foster, Robertson and Jake Giddings.
As the cars came through Paddock Hill Bend and into Druids, a mistake from Foster meant he ran wide, collecting Fielding as they charged up the hill. Pieces of body work went flying from the Tollbar Racing Ginetta, and a dislodged bonnet for Fielding meant that both drivers had to pit, with the consequence of retirement for both drivers.
As for the front of the pack, Collins was still leading from Bailey in second place who was closely being followed by Giddings in third, Robertson in fourth and Morris in fifth. On lap two as they entered into Druids, Robertson set his sights on Giddings, and stole third position. He then went onto having a sneaky look on Bailey, but Giddings wanted in on the action, and stole back his third position at Druids on the following lap.
As the drivers entered into lap four, Giddings ran wide at Paddock Hill Bend, allowing Robertson to sneak through again and take third place position at Druids. Morris also saw his opportunity to make up a place, and went up to fourth. However, Giddings wasn’t going to let Morris pass so easily, and as they went into Pilgrim’s Drop, he managed to pass Morris for that fourth place position.
As they entered into lap five and with the pair still jostling for position, Morris saw his next opportunity and made it stick to pass Giddings out on the exit of Clark Curve. With the FML driver still trying to defend as hard as he can, he tried to pass Morris as they went up into Druids. However, the manoeuvre did not go quite to plan, allowing Beacon Racing’s Niall Murray to fly through from starting last on the grid and steal the position.
With Collins still running well out at the front, and Bailey behind him, Robertson was beginning to make up some time behind the pair, and close the gap. Then, drama ensued for Collins as he got really out of shape of the exit of Paddock Hill Bend on the run up to Druids. He flew from one side of the track to the other, but was extremely lucky to tame the spin, and rejoin the race, albeit a lot further down the pack. Second place sitter Bailey also lost out from this incident as he had no-where to go as the HHC Ginetta flew across the track. He had no choice but to throw himself into the gravel trap and regain the action after the carnage.
Thanks to one HHC’s misfortune, the other, Robertson, managed to worm his way through the incident and come out unscathed and leading the race; followed by the Hillspeed Ginetta of Morris, with Beacon Racing’s Murray in third.
As the race went into the final stages, Morris piled on immense pressure to HHC driver Robertson, but the cool, calm and collected 14 year old managed to bring the car home to take the win for race two, followed by the newly crowned Ginetta Junior Champion 2011 Morris. Third place went to Murray, making it his second podium of the weekend, who crossed the line just 0.066 seconds after Morris. To top of the Irishman’s strong spirits, he also took the bonus point for the fastest lap of the race, which now sees him fourth in the driver’s standings. Fourth was to be had by Bailey, fifth went to Giddings and crossing the line in sixth was Max Coates.
Unfortunately for Collins, after that fantastic drive which saw him lead for most of the race, after his spin, he could only manage a seventh place finish.
The final rounds of the Ginetta Junior Championship will take place at the Silverstone National Circuit in Northamptonshire in two weeks time on 15th/16th October.
