Murrells Takes Debut Win In Historic Supercup Race

George Murrells (GBR) Optimum Motorsport/Poor Boys Ginetta G55

George Murrells took his début win in what was a historic race for the Ginetta GT Supercup. For the first time there would be a mandatory pit stop during the race, and it was Murrells’ Optimum Motorsport team that made the best of the pit-stops to secure a well fought victory.

Running in third for most of the race, Murrells put in good out laps to take the lead after Tom Sharp, Carl Breze and Nathan Freke endured slow pit-stops.

“I’m ecstatic to be honest”, said Murrells, “We’ve kind of been frustrated all year, we knew we were quick in the championship we did before so couldn’t work out why we’d struggled a bit this year. We found out that our engine was bad though so we changed that for this weekend. It’s a fantastic result, I’m really happy.”

Second placed Adam Morgan took his 15th podium of the season, and keeps himself in the title race after keeping consistent and scoring more points.

“It was quite a stressful race really”, said Morgan, “After the pit-stop I didn’t have a clue where I was on the track so I carried on around as fast as I could. Our main problem was the tyres we used at the start were bad and the ones we changed to in the pit-stop weren’t much better.

“We struggled the whole way through so second place is a fantastic result – thanks to Ciceley Racing, the boys have worked so hard and they deserve a good result like this. It’s a credit to them, this podium is for them.”

Nathan Freke came home in third after a tough and well fought race, the Century Motorsport driver had to deal with his car filling with smoke which affected his vision and concentration. The result takes his unbroken record of podium finishes up to nine.

“I got a very good start but from the first lap the cab was filling with smoke on the right-hand side”, said Freke “After three or four laps, I started feeling drowsy and making silly mistakes – I thought at one stage I was going to have to stop. Then I was worried about the car catching fire in the pit-lane but it cleared itself thankfully. By that time, the tyres had gone so I’m glad to pick up some good points.”

Freddie Hetherington who was making his return to the series netted a fantastic fourth, while G50 driver Tom Ingram took fifth and another class win. Championship contender and pole man Carl Breeze didn’t have the best of luck and finished 14th and a lap down after trouble in the pit-stops.

The next rounds of the Ginetta GT Supercup will be at Brands Hatch Circuit in Kent on the 1st and 2nd October.
