Robertson takes his first career win in race two at Croft
HHC driver Charlie Robertson wins round ten of the Ginetta Junior Championship, making him quite possibly the youngest driver to have ever one a car race in the UK, and most certainly in the BTCC package.
At just 14 years and 5 months, Robertson fought through a hard race to come out on top, and stand on the top step of the podium for the first time in his career.
Although the HHC driver was on pole, it wasn’t as easy to hold the position to win the race. As the cars left the grid, both Robertson and second place sitter George Gamble got a good getaway from the line, but it was the Tollbar Racing Ginetta of Tom Howard that surprised everyone.
From lining up fourth on the grid, Howard leapfrogged Robertson, Gamble and Brad Bailey after a brave move around the outside at Clervaux, snatching the lead and demoting Robertson to second.
Howard led from Robertson for the first five laps, until the HHC driver saw his chances at Tower Bend and he re-gained the top podium position after out-breaking the Tollbar Racing driver.
The fight for third position was now hotting up between Will Foster and Beacon Racing’s Niall Murray. As for fifth place, Jake Giddings and Seb Morris were battling it out between each other, when the FML Ginetta and the Hillspeed driver came into contact, causing Morris to spin, putting him back down the pack.
With such a good start to the weekend, Gamble wanted his luck to continue. But unfortunately for the TJ Motorsport driver this wasn’t to be the case as there was contact between him and Giddings at the hairpin, which Brad Bailey also fell victim to.
As the chequered flag waved, Robertson crossed the line to take his very first and well deserved win. In second place, with a time just 1.5 seconds shy of the HHC driver was Tollbar’s Howard and making it two out of two third place wins of the day was Foster.
Fourth position went to Niall Murray, a much better finish for the Beacon Racing driver than in the first race and fifth was to be had by Morris, which was a good recovery position after his earlier spin.
Sixth was to be had by Myles Collins, a performance which matches his best finish so far this season and seventh went to the second Hillspeed driver Struan Moore, who had never been to the Croft circuit previous to the weekend’s events, which is also his best finish so far this season.
Eighth place went to Giddings, in ninth place was Bailey, and to finish off the top ten was Max Coates.
There’s a long break in the Ginetta Junior calendar now, with the next round being just over six weeks away. So the next round will be the 6th/7th August at the Snetterton Circuit in Norwich.
