Morris’ win overshadowed by Murray’s performance

Seb Morris does it yet again, with a staggering 23 second lead to win race two, but his victory was over shadowed by an immense drive from Niall Murray, after an incident which put him down the pack at the beginning of the race to finish in second place.

The second race of the Ginetta Junior Championship was the first wet race of the season, with some of the drivers not having raced in wet weather conditions before. So prior the race even starting, the crowds could tell they were going to be in for some action.

The first test of the day, even before lining up on the grid was tyre choice. It had been raining most of the day, but by the time the second race at 4.30pm began, the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to poke through, so was the better option wets or slicks? Nearly all drivers opted for full wets, with the biggest gambler being Murray, who after listening to advice from his older brother Eoin decided to go with slicks.

As the lights went out, Morris and second place sitter Tom Howard both got an equally good start off the line. Morris then defended his position as he moved to the left-hand side of the track to take the racing line, pushing his rival onto the grass, causing him to lose a bit of time to the Hillspeed driver.

By the end of lap one, Morris had already pulled out a 3.7 second lead on his rivals, which put him in good stead for the rest of the race. Howard then found himself under pressure from George Gamble, who managed to overtake the Tollbar Racing driver for second position.

As for Charlie Robertson and Jake Giddings, they both had a disastrous time when they went off at Cascades. Giddings hit the barrier, causing his race to come to an end, but Robertson managed to re-join the racing.

As the cars entered lap two, Murray, who had been making up places on the first lap, was tagged by Patrick McClughan as they went through Lodge Corner, resulting in the HHC Motorsport driver having to pit, and Murray back down the field.

With the race entering the middle stages, the cars of William Foster, Max Coates, Mikey Day and Howard, were closely bunched together fighting it out between themselves. Not far behind them however were Robertson and Murray who were both on a charge to make up as many places as possible.

At the same time as this Sennan Fielding and Myles Collins were battling it out for position out of Cascades and into Lakeside, when Collins got onto the grass after contact with the TJ Motorsport Ginetta. He tried to regain control and get back on the track when he spun and so very nearly hit the barrier. Luckily, he could re-join the race.

With no more rain falling on the track and a dry line slowly beginning to appear, some drivers began struggling for pace, but for Murray, this was never an issue, as he began picking off drivers one by one and by lap six, he was up to third.

On the penultimate lap, Murray then locked his sites on to second place sitter Gamble, and at the Hairpin, the Beacon Racing driver saw his opportunity and went for it, putting him up to second place.

As the drivers crossed the line, Morris finished with an astounding 23 second lead over an elated Murray in second place, with Gamble finishing in third. Fourth place went to Robertson, who made his way through the pack after his off at Cascades, fifth went to Foster and sixth went to his team-mate Howard. Seventh place went to Coates, who had a much better drive in race two than the previous race, eighth was Fielding, and Declan Jones finished in ninth place. Finishing off the top ten was HHC Motorsport’s Mikey Day.

The next rounds of the Ginetta Junior Championship will be held at Croft in North Yorkshire in two weeks time on the 18th/19th June.
