Plato Wins As Honda Hit Self Destruct
Jason Plato won a dramatic race two as the two Hondas collided on the final lap to hand the Chevrolet driver his fourth victory of the season.
Gordon Shedden led from pole and looked to have the victory secured until Neal, who had come from sixth on the grid, tried a late lunge into the final corner, Lodge, on the final lap. The two cars made contact and ended up in the gravel with Neal unable to rejoin and Shedden just scrambling out to finish sixth.
This left Plato to inherit victory, after he had spent most of the race running third holding off James Nash. Nash was narrowly beaten to what at the time was fourth, but became second as the Hondas made contact, by Rob Collard who was on a full set of wet tyres and became stronger in the latter stages of the race as the rain began to fall more heavily. However, Collard was penalised one second after the race by the stewards who felt he had been too aggressive in trying to make the move.
Andrew Jordan finished fourth from tenth on the grid ahead of Alex MacDowall and the recovering Shedden.
Home favourite Paul O’Neill was seventh, with the second BMW of Nick Foster eighth. Mat Jackson was ninth and will start the final race on pole. Tom Chilton rounded off the point scorers in tenth.
After the race the debate about turbos was reignited as Plato looked furious when he climbed out of the car despite victory. He was said to be annoyed at how easily Matt Neal was able to overtake him during the race and the general straight line speed that the Hondas possess.
The draw for the grid for race three has been made and Mat Jackson will start on pole ahead of Nick Foster and Paul O’Neill.
