Airwaves U-Turn

Airwaves U-Turn

Little over three months ago Airwaves, part of the Wrigleys chewing gum brand pulled out of the BTCC at title sponsor of the Motorbase Performance team and left the Kent based team looking for sponsors and potential backers. Now in a change of fortune Airwaves will again return to BTCC and Motorbase Performance again running under the Airwaves BMW name.

Coupled with this is the news that Leyland Paints have extended their deal with the team which puts Dave Bartrum and his Airwaves BMW team in a very healthy position financially going into the season despite having yet to name his drivers for the season. “When we introduced Wrigley’s Airwaves to the BTCC last year we were ecstatic to have secured such a hugely recognisable brand as our title sponsor. People see Airwaves as the chewing gum that helps you ‘Kick up a gear’ and this association, as well as the brands support is of massive benefit to us. It’s great news for the championship that brands like Airwaves and Leyland Paints feel it is the place to be,” said Bartrum.

A number have drivers have been rumoured to be driving for Airwaves BMW but the team were dealt a blow when Collard decided to jump ship and switch to West Surrey Racing. A number of drivers have tested for the Airwaves BMW team including Jonny Adam, Steven Kane, Ben Collins, Tim Bridgman and Alex MacDowell.

“Our original plan was to run a BTCC newcomer alongside an experienced driver, in the same way that we brought Steven Kane and Jonny Adam to touring cars over the past couple of years – that’s how the BTCC grows and sustains itself. m not sure it will quite work out like that now… as things stand today, we might even go one better,” said Bartrum commenting on their yet to be announced driver line up.

With only four days left till the inaugural Media Day, this year held at Brands Hatch, then we don’t have to wait long till everything will be confirmed.
